8 th National Conference of Indian Association of Forensic Odontology

The 8 th National Conference of Indian Association of Forensic Odontology was held at Sardar Patel Post Graduate Institute of Dental and Medical Sciences, Lucknow, on October 30 and 31, 2010. The theme of the conference was Crime and Dentistry. For the first time, a Workshop on Forensic Odontology was held for the undergraduate (BDS) students to make them aware of the recent advances and concepts in the field of Forensic Odontology. Prof. J.G. Kannapan, president, and Prof. S. Balagopal, president elect of IAFO, along with various other speakers enlightened the dental students.

The Convener of the conference was Prof. Anil Singh, Head of the Department, Department of Oral Pathology, SPPGIDMS, Lucknow, and the Organizing Secretary was Dr. Shiva Kumar G. C., Reader, Department of Oral Medicine, SPPGIDMS, Lucknow. The conference was held under the Presidentship of Prof J. G. Kannappan, Professor Emeritus of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai. Shri. O. P. Singh, leader of opposition in Vidhan Sabha, was the Chief Guest, while Prof. Dr. R. K. Sharma, Director Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, was the Guest of Honor.

The overall registrations in the conference were 850, which included 500 PGs and 350 Staff delegates. The highlight of the conference was scientific sessions, in the form of poster and oral presentation (40 posters and 350 oral presentations). Prizes were awarded for the best presentations and Dr. Parul Ahuja was the recipient of the IAFO Prof. B. Sivapathasundharam Award this year for her research paper titled Maxillary central incisor as biomarker of age: An in-vivo radiographic study.

The conference was also honored by the presence of eminent personalities in the field of forensics like Prof. T. D. Dogra, Prof. and Head, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, AIIMS. The Guest speakers were Prof. R. K. Gorea, Faculty member of Forensic and Legal Medicine of Royal College of Physicians, London, and Sri. Rajiv Krishna (IPS), DIG, Lucknow.

The conference concluded with the valedictory function on October 31 at 5 PM, with the hope that the information gained by the scientific sessions might help in enhancing the knowledge in application of Forensic Odontology in various fields including crime.
